About Lowlands
.
Lowlands Lavender is a 8 acre organic farm in the beautifull district of Hawkes Bay. The rainshadow of the surrounding hills creates an ideal microclimate for growing lavender. With less then 20 inches of rain per year. The Hawkes Bay region is like the mediterranean districts and the provence in France where this auromatic herb is native.
Hawkes Bay and the larger area of the East Coast is an interesting area, and a place of contrasts, with the Art Deco and Spanish Mission-style architecture of Hastings and Napier, the main cities of the area. The area is know as Hawkes Bay while the actual bay is known as Hawke Bay.
At 10.47am on the 3rd of February 1931 Hawkes Bay was shook by a violent earthquake. Both cities were reduced to rubble. The main shake was recorded as far away as Kew (UK), Cairo and Bombay.
Despite the grip of a world-wide depression the country was then in, unemployed actually flocked to the stricken area in search of work, so much so the area had to be sealed off, and only those with permits allowed in. The resulting rebuilt city has been given a Art Deco style of architecture now unique to New Zealand.
The Lowlands Lavender fields contain more than 10000 plants. This gives the field the beautifull vilolet to deep purple color from the row after row planted lavender. The test-garden we have has several varietes of lavender plants where we are always working and looking for a more erfect species The perfect lavender is used for many products in perfumery as in medicinal, culinary and floral landscape.

We harvest our lavender december - january and invite you to visit our farm in Havelock North during the blooming season.

We are open daily from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. In the summer, visit the farm to wark through the fields and pick your bouguet of the varieties you like best. Just being in a lavender field is a fragrant and relaxing experience!
